A highly imaginative special foodies’ one-night-stand is to take place on Cafebarge at Tarbert on Loch Fyne in May [we'll have the date shortly].

The title for the evening is Food Fusion; reflecting the taste of Scotland, Pakistan and beyond – all presented in the usual quirky ‘tapas’ style for which Cafebarge, a seafood and vegetarian restaurant on a Dutch barge [above], is renowned.

The resident genius at Cafebarge, Michael Casey, always inventive, says: ‘We challenged a food blogger and cook, Graeme Taylor, to experience the pressure of running a professional kitchen for paying diners. It was a bit of a tease really, as bloggers and critics often haven’t felt the heat of working a restaurant; especially when they have to plan their own menus, source the ingredients and stay within a set budget.

‘But for this night, the poacher turns gamekeeper. So we should see some interesting stuff happening on the stoves.’

On the evening, Graeme will be assisted in the galley by Sumayya Jamil. Sumayya hails from Pakistan and is immersed in the flavours of that country’s culture. Also a food writer, she is well-known around London for her supper-clubs under the guise of Pukka Paki – and has a passion for her homeland that resonates in her flavouring and recipes.

Graeme Taylor, quashing his nerves, says: ‘Ethical, local, seasonal, food, with a quirky side – that is what Cafebarge believe in.

‘This is reflected in my food philosophy and Food Fusion Night will echo it. We will be using Tarbert’s fine seafood and local Scottish seasonal produce.’

Asked if he was nervous about cooking for 30 paying guests he says: ‘I am passionate and committed and with the support of Sumayya and the Cafebarge team I think we can offer diners a great experience.’

A celebration of Scotland’s natural seafood and fresh-produce larder – combined with the unique and distinct flavours of Pakistan – Food Fusion is on Saturday 18th May and costs £22 per head.

Bookings at Cafebarge, Tarbert, Loch Fyne.

‘There are sure to be some haunting, spicy nuances in the guid Scottish produce’ says Taylor. Bring it on.
